Born in Luxembourg, Joseph Schmitz grew up multilingual and speaks fluent Luxembourgish and Spanish as well as German, English and French. Joseph Schmitz studied molecular biology and biophysics at ETH Zurich (Diploma 2007). From 2008 to 2012, he trained as a patent attorney with a large industrial company in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. He joined Isler & Pedrazzini AG in 2012 and has been a partner since 2023. In 2012, Joseph Schmitz was admitted as a European Patent Attorney and in 2014 he was entered in the Swiss Patent Attorney Register.
In 2022, he completed the diploma “Patent Litigation in Europe” at the University of Strasbourg, which entitles him to represent clients before the Unified Patent Court of the EU.
Joseph Schmitz has extensive experience not only in obtaining and defending patents, but also in enforcing them in court. He specializes in the fields of biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, medical technology and organic chemistry. Joseph Schmitz also has particular experience in obtaining and enforcing supplementary protection certificates.
Joseph Schmitz has been an accredited IP Special Coach at Innosuisse since 2019 and advises start-ups on developing their IP strategy. He was named an IP Rising Star 2021/22 by the renowned trade journal “Managing Intellectual Property”.
